How can you keep your child safe on the internet?

Keep your child safe online by defining family-friendly DNS server settings for the child's user account on the computer. Define different DNS settings for each user account on the PCs. When a user logs in, the defined DNS settings will be used. In order to protect your children from inappropriate content, you can define family-friendly DNS settings for their accounts. This is useful when using a shared computer with multiple accounts. When you log in, you will use non-filtered DNS settings. When your children log in, filtered DNS settings will be used automatically without affecting your usage.

Goals:

• Keep kids from accessing harmful content online.
• Help increase the security of your computers by blocking malware, phishing sites, scams, and viruses (DNS servers can do this for you).
• Increase your kids' safety online by setting Filtered DNS for their accounts and Non-Filtered DNS for yours to bypass blocked websites (by your ISP). This way, you won't have to change the DNS settings back and forth on shared computers.

Requirement for Kid Shield:

• In addition to the administrator account, you should create one or more limited accounts for your children.
• You should set up the DNS settings for each user on the computer.
• All administrator accounts should be password-protected.

Suggestions:

• You should create limited user accounts for kids or non-advanced users:
  Kids or non-advanced users might harm your computer when using an administrator account. They might unknowingly change PC settings or allow the installation of malicious programs.
• Protect administrator accounts with a password:
  Without knowing the administrator password, limited users cannot change the computer's vital settings, install or remove programs, or modify or delete system files.
• You should define Filtered DNS settings for your kids' accounts.
  Filtered DNS:Protect yourself from viruses and fraudulent content, including blocks, non-family-friendly websites, malware, phishing, and scam sites.
  Strictly Filtered DNS: In addition to Filtered DNS, it also blocks file-sharing websites.
  Non-Filtered DNS:It allows non-family-friendly websites and blocks malware, phishing, and scam sites. It protects against viruses and fraudulent content.
  Advantages of Using Custom DNS Settings (Other Than Those Provided by Your ISP): When you click on a link on a webpage, you may be redirected to a website that is potentially harmful. Most DNS servers keep records of phishing, scams, and other potentially harmful websites. Using custom DNS settings (even non-filtered ones) helps protect your PC from potentially harmful websites or content.
• Can we define non-filtered DNS settings for limited users?:
  Some parents might prefer to use a limited user account with non-filtered DNS settings. In this case, they should password-protect their account to prevent their children from using their accounts to bypass the filtered DNS settings.
• Modify the DNS settings on your ADSL router:
  You can change the DNS settings on your ADSL router to Filtered DNS, and then change your DNS settings to Non-Filtered (if you want). In this way, all users (including computers that connect to the internet via that ADSL router) have to use Filtered DNS settings on the router, except for administrators or users with custom DNS settings. This improves the security of all PCs on your network with a single setting change.
• You don't need to use the Kid Shield in the following situations:
  
  • Defining the same DNS for all users.
  • Defining the same type of DNS for all users: all Filtered DNS, all Non-Filtered DNS, or Filtered DNS with blocking of file-sharing websites.
  If you want all users to use the same DNS settings, you should use the DNS changer tab to change the DNS settings for all users. You should also stop the Kid Shield (or delete the users' DNS settings) because it is not necessary in such cases.
• Every user should have a DNS settings:
  Assumptions: Assume a PC with one administrator account and one limited user account.
  • Define "Filtered DNS" for limited users and leave the administrator account as it is. When a limited user logs on, KidShield will change the DNS settings to "Filtered DNS" for that user. When an administrator logs in, KidShield will not change the DNS settings because there are no DNS settings for an administrator. In this case, the administrator will also use Filtered DNS.
  • Define "Non-Filtered DNS" for limited users and leave the administrator account as it is. As in the above situation, limited users will also use Non-Filtered DNS.

How can different DNS settings be defined for each user on Windows?

1. Step:
Start Smart DNS Changer and select the kid shield tab.


2. Step:
Choose a user from the Select User.


3. Step:
Choose a DNS from the Choose a DNS Server for selected User above drop-down menu. for kids choose Filtered DNS (family Friendly) DNS settings. The most strict Filtered DNSes are Norton DNS3 and Norton ConnectSafe. for administrator accounts you can choose any DNS settings (filtered or non-filtered one).


As you can see in the snapshot below, we can define different DNS settings for each user.
We have defined a DNS setting for each user. When a user logs on, the system automatically changes the defined DNS settings for the logged-on user.
