In Victorian times, however, design got out of touch with life. Needless ornamentation made us forge: what furniture was really for. Modern design has stripped away all that is inessential. Its purpose is not to astonish, but to provide us with what is pleasing and useful. A piece of really fine modern furniture should never be seen in isolation, but as part of a setting. Only then can we judge its shape, colour, and utility.
