(I) The famous Dutch graphic artist, Maurits Cornelius Escher, was no good at maths at school. (II) But his drawings nearly all show an understanding of mathematical principles and perspective. (III) Belvedere and Day and Night are two of his most famous drawings. (IV) Indeed, mathematicians are fascinated by his drawings, in particular his "impossible" buildings. (V) He himself was aware of this, and once said that he had more in common with mathematicians than with his fellow artists.
