One thing that makes the British secondary educational system diffıcult to understand is that _______.
The British secondary educational system can be
difficult for a foreigner to understand. This is only to
be expected in a system where an expensive private
school is called a "public" school, whereas a school
which is free and open to everyone is called a "state"
school. State secondary schools are now usually
called "comprehensive" schools. This is because
they combine the functions of two older types of
schools: the grammar school for academically
gifted pupils, and the secondary modern school for
pupils who expected to start work at sixteen. The
situation is further complicated by the continued
existence of grammar and secondary modern
schools in a few conservative areas.
