A revolutionary feat of park management, tree
surgeons in Paris have started the painstaking
job of inserting a computer chip into each of the
90.000 tress lining the capital's streets. It is hoped
that hi-tech surveillance will be better than the
human eye at preserving their health. Previously, it
used to take months to examine the trees in a
single district and assess their health, but by the end
of the year, all twenty districts will be able to be
checked in 15 minutes. The life of a tree in Paris is
not an easy one. Car exhaust fumes, dog urine, salt
and lack of water pose great threats to their survival.
Consequently, the life expectancy of trees in the city
centre is generally 30 or so years less than those in
the suburbs. Park workers hope this new technology
will help correct this.
